Papplewick Pumping Station- Britain’s finest Victorian Waterworks

This beautiful place was designed in the early 1880s to pump millions of gallons of clean fresh water every day to the rapidly increasing population of Industrial Nottingham. Today, thanks to the endeavours of The Papplewick Pumping Station Trust, a Registered Charity dedicated to the preservation of the Pumping Station, you can still experience the most spectacular, preserved water Pumping Station in the British Isles. The Pumping Station is now protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the highest preservation order that can be bestowed upon a site in England.

Newstead Abbey

A beautiful historic Abbey, steeped in over 800 years of history, set in a glorious landscape of gardens and parkland within the heart of Nottinghamshire. Founded as a monastic Abbey in the late 12th century, Newstead was home to the poet Lord Byron between 1808 - 1814. Inside the Abbey there is much to explore including Victorian room settings, and the poets private apartments. Newstead’s 300 acres of parkland owes much of its beauty to the River Leen feeding the lakes, ponds and cascades that ornament its gardens, along with its wildlife of peacocks and swans. The formal gardens are the perfect place to relax and offer colour and interest throughout the seasons.

The cost for this trip is £42.00, this includes a tour at Papplewick Pumping Station & refreshments; a tour at Newstead Abbey and transport.

We will leave Holmes Chapel at 8:30am/Goostrey 8:40am and expect to be back home for approx. 6:00pm.

Destination : Llandudno and cruise on the Paddle Steamer Waverley
Date               : 30th May 2025

Status Live: Names now being taken for waiting list

Enjoy a day in Llandudno and cruise on the Paddle Steamer Waverley.

The morning is your own to enjoy Llandudno.  This famous Victorian seaside town on the North Wales coast has plenty for visitors to enjoy.  Take a stroll down the promenade and enjoy the view and sea air; ride the tram to the top of the Great Orme, enjoy one the walking trails around the town; visit a museum; view Llandudno from the longest pier in Wales; peruse the shops or just stop for tea and cake in one of the many cafes and watch the world go by.  There is always something to do in Llandudno!

In the afternoon we are booked on the Paddle Steamer Waverley to enjoy a cruise along the North Wales Coast taking in the Great Orme and Puffin Island.  We will board the Waverley from the Pier.

Waverley is named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels. She was built to replace the 1899 Waverley which was sunk by enemy action on May 29, 1940 at Dunkirk.

Waverley is the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer. In 1974, at the end of her working life, she was famously gifted for £1 to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society. Waverley Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., a charity registered in Scotland, was set up to own and operate the ship. Waverley then began a second career as one of the country’s best-loved tourist attractions. Since she has been in operational preservation, she has been awarded four stars by Visit Scotland, an engineering heritage award, and has carried over 6 million passengers from over 60 ports around the UK.

Puffin island is a Special Protection Area, particularly because of its great cormorant colony of over 750 birds, which is over 10% of the national population, making it one of the largest colonies in the British Isles.   It also has good numbers of guillemot, Razorbill, shag and kittiwake nesting, and in recent years small numbers of common eider and black guillemot.  Also look out for the Atlantic Puffins, from which the island gets its modern English name.

A great cruise to spot some the sea birds of the British Isles, or to just observe this spectacular coast line.  Don't forget your binoculars!!!

Cost £60.00, includes cruise and transport.

Destination : St Asaph Cathedral & Bodnant Garden
Date               : 3rd June 2025
Status Live: Names being taken for waiting list

I'm sure that many of us have driven past the stunning cathedral at St Asaph on our journey to other places in North Wales.  Today we are stopping for a tour of the "Marble Church" on the A55.  Then we are continuing our journey to Bodnant Garden.

The city of St Asaph lies between Denbigh and the coastal resort of Rhyl. It is set on the banks of the River Elwy.
St Asaph Cathedral is the smallest in Britain and one of the oldest in Wales. The present structure dates from the 15th century and houses William Morgan’s first Welsh translation of the bible.  Worship lies at the heart of everything in the life and work of this ancient cathedral where prayers have been offered daily for 1,450 years.

Bodnant is a Grade I listed historic garden.
It covers 80 acres and includes formal gardens, shrub-filled glades, meadows and woods, dells and water gardens and is home to historic plant collections.  With intimate corners, sweeping lawns, grand terraces and verdant woodland, there are many gardens in one at Bodnant. Created over 150 years, with plants collected and brought to Britain from far afield, and the incredible vision of generations of the McLaren family and Puddle head gardeners, this haven of rarity and beauty with a stunning backdrop of the Carneddau mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) is a delight for the senses.

At this time of year the Laburnum Arch should be in full bloom.  The golden blooms of the arch only flower between 10 - 14 days each year in late May - early June.  The arch is the only one of its kind in the country which is curved, following the wall which runs alongside.

Cost for National Trust Members £25.00; non National Trust Members £41.50, this includes a tour of the Cathedral; entry to Bodnant Garden and transport.

Destination : Matthew Bourne's The Midnight Bell. Lowry Theatre, Matinee Performance
Date               : 3rd July 2025

Status Live: Bookings now being taken

Matthew Bourne’s award-winning The Midnight Bell comes to Salford for the first time in 2025.

In 1930s London ordinary people emerge from cheap boarding houses nightly to pour out their passions, hopes and dreams in the pubs and fog-bound streets of Soho and Fitzrovia. Step inside The Midnight Bell, a tavern where one particular lonely-hearts club gather to play out their lovelorn affairs of the heart; bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption.

Inspired by the great English novelist Patrick Hamilton (Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, Hangover Square) who created some of the most authentic fiction of his era; stories borne out of years of social interactions with the working man and woman at his favourite location - the London Pub.

Hailed by The Observer as ‘the undisputed king of dance theatre’, master storyteller Bourne has produced some of the most successful dance theatre productions of the last 30 years.

Situated on a private peninsula overlooking stunning coastal scenery, the Italian Riviera meets rural Wales with a riot of colour and architectural styles at Portmeirion Village. Built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion Village comprises of a cluster of colour-washed buildings around a central piazza, scenic surroundings and extensive woodlands, two hotels, historic cottages, gift shops and restaurants. The village was built over two phases, 1926 - 1939 and 1954 - 1976 by which time Clough was well into his 90s.

The concept of a tightly grouped coastal village had been envisaged by Clough Williams-Ellis years before he found the site, close to his own home in North Wales, on which he managed to realise his dream. Using an eco-friendly approach, he designed his architectural vision around a Mediterranean piazza. Endangered buildings and unwanted artefacts from all over the globe were transported and rebuilt to create a nest of loggias, grand porticoes and tiny terracotta-roofed houses, painted in bright colours.

Take time to explore the white sandy beaches of the Dwyryd Estuary and discover hidden caves, gullies and a flurry of interesting plants and discover the impressive natural landscape surrounding Portmeirion. The subtropical forest, affectionately known as The Gwyllt (Wildwood in Welsh) features some of Britain's largest trees, secret gardens, a derelict castle and rare flowers. Explore the 70 acres of exotic woodlands with 19 miles of pathways which cut through forests, secret spaces and coastal coves.

Tevye, a dairy farmer, is an old-fashioned man who finds solace in tradition. Like many fathers in the close-knit community of Anatevka, he has raised his descendants to follow the Jewish customs of his long-gone ancestors. The time has now arrived for him to find husbands worthy of marrying his precious daughters. As tradition has it, he must find the perfect suitable match. But in 1905 Tsarist Russia, this is easier said than done as the country wobbles on thin ice, just one bad incident away from a violent uproar, a new era in which young people listen to their hearts and not their elders…
