We are doing a newly-devised route this time, beginning at the Brownlow Inn. We will head south to Little Moreton Hall and return via Glebe Farm at Newbold Astbury.
12.4 km (7.7 miles), total ascent 91 m.
A short distance north of the Brownlow Inn on Wallhill Lane, a path heads across fields on the left. At Spenmoss it turns to the south and reaches Congleton Road at Spen Green, near the Blue Bell pub. The path continues on the opposite side of the road and crosses more farmland, passing by Abbey Grove. After reaching a strip of woodland between the farms of Alcumlow Hall and Chance Hall, it meets Chance Hall Lane, which we follow for 500 metres.
We now turn onto the South Cheshire Way which leads us to the A34 at Cuttleford, almost opposite Little Moreton Hall. We cross the road and continue on the SCW as it heads eastwards away from the road, affording a great view of the Hall. The path crosses a couple of small fields and then begins to ascend gently towards the Macclesfield Canal. Just before reaching the waterway, we take a path on the left which brings us to New Road after a kilometre.
We turn right towards the canal and then walk along the towpath for a kilometre to Oak Farm. Here we take a path that meets Watery Lane near Ciss Green Farm. A few tens of metres northwards on the lane brings us to a path on the right that leads eventually to Glebe Farm at Newbold Astbury. Turning left here, we follow a route across fields that reaches the A34 at Dairybrook Farm.
We cross over and pick up a path on the other side that tracks the Dairy Brook for a while and leads on to the hamlet of Brownlow. Continuing, we soon reach Walhill Lane and turn southwards, arriving back at the Brownlow Inn after a half kilometre.
