We are returning to Little Budworth for February's walk, but this time we will be doing a completely different route, starting from the Red Lion Inn, a Robinson's pub in the centre of the village.
The Red Lion has a very reasonably priced menu for those opting to stay for lunch after the walk.
10.8 km (6.7 miles), total ascent 67 m.
We first head northwards out of the village along Mill Lane for almost a kilometre. At Coneygreaves Farm we bear off right onto a footpath across fields and pass a small plantation at Grange Farm. Near Outside Farm, we arrive at the A54 road and turn right along it for a couple of hundred metres. Although there is no pavement, a grassy verge allows us to keep out of the way of the traffic.
Directly opposite Outside Farm we turn left off the main road onto a field path which heads northwards across undulating country towards an area called Marton Green. Here we veer to the west and pass Marton Villa to arrive at Marton Hole, a sunken pond surrounded by deciduous woodland.
We now head across more fields and reach the A54 again near Chesterlane Farm. We cross over and take a path past Marton House Farm which leads to a further traversal of the same road. On the other side there is an abrupt change of scenery as we meander through the Winsford district of Littler.
At Hebden Green we leave suburbia behind and take a path alongside Poolstead Brook. After passing Woodford Hall on the left we cross Chester Lane Brook on a footbridge and soon reach the lonely Fennywood Farm.
For the next two kilometres there is little sign of habitation until we eventually reach the fringes of Little Budworth village at Lower Farm. Emerging onto Mill Lane opposite the parish church, it is a short step back to the Red Lion.
