Our first stop this morning is Papplewick Pumping Station, our visit includes a tour and refreshments. This afternoon we are visiting Newstead Abbey where we have a tour of the Abbey and time to explore the gardens and parkland.
Papplewick Pumping Station- Britain’s finest Victorian Waterworks
This beautiful place was designed in the early 1880s to pump millions of gallons of clean fresh water every day to the rapidly increasing population of Industrial Nottingham. Today, thanks to the endeavours of The Papplewick Pumping Station Trust, a Registered Charity dedicated to the preservation of the Pumping Station, you can still experience the most spectacular, preserved water Pumping Station in the British Isles.
The Pumping Station is now protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the highest preservation order that can be bestowed upon a site in England.
Newstead Abbey
A beautiful historic Abbey, steeped in over 800 years of history, set in a glorious landscape of gardens and parkland within the heart of Nottinghamshire. Founded as a monastic Abbey in the late 12th century, Newstead was home to the poet Lord Byron between 1808 - 1814. Inside the Abbey there is much to explore including Victorian room settings, and the poets private apartments.
Newstead’s 300 acres of parkland owes much of its beauty to the River Leen feeding the lakes, ponds and cascades that ornament its gardens, along with its wildlife of peacocks and swans. The formal gardens are the perfect place to relax and offer colour and interest throughout the seasons.
The cost for this trip is £42.00, this includes a tour at Papplewick Pumping Station & refreshments; a tour at Newstead Abbey and transport.
We will leave Holmes Chapel at 8:30am/Goostrey 8:40am and expect to be back home for approx. 6:00pm.
